LEDA and THE SWAN

Yes I know, it’s been done many times before, however it’s usually done as a romantic image, despite the fact that this was not consensual congress. Swans look gorgeous but are in fact extremely strong and can badly bruise an adult and break bones on a child. It’s not that they are naturally aggressive, but like most animals, they are protective of territory and young.

An encounter with a swan-god would not be an enjoyable experience, hence the image and the poetry.

LEDA

Ravished by a god
she wakes
screaming
the sound
of beating wings
fluttering
the walls
of a womb
cradling
doomed twins.

Blood tipped feathers
lie at her feet
the colour of rust
and dead desire.
